Hygiene is usually associated with the idea of cleanliness and sanitation. Physical and mental hygiene are terms that are used to characterize holistic practices used to promote health and wellness. In this way, keeping the body clean and free of infection and inflammation is understood as hygienic and therefore wellness-oriented. However, one must expand the idea of hygiene to include those actions and beliefs that generate optimal mental well-being and physical health. The actions needed to generate human wellness are well known and may be thought of as the pillars of one’s health integrity. This post provides a broader concept for realizing and maintaining bright wellness, or the optimized functioning of the individual in all spheres of wellness, as demonstrated by persistent optimism, generalized openness to life and new experiences, high level physical wellness, healthy interpersonal relationships, and creativity.

Ensuring that an individual regularly has adequate food, hydration, exercise, mental challenge and novelty, etc., will construct a strong foundation for overall good health. However, there are also higher or non-physical needs that must be considered and which build on these essentials. For a vigorous health state, there are nine pillars to foster dynamic wellness. These same dimensions can be differentially applied to banish illness and promote health when used with the support and services of a health care practitioner.
